Frequently asked questions
The short version: a free account gets you one product journey and an evidence-backed First Decision with managed AI — no model to configure, no card. The workspace also runs on the AI you already pay for, across leading providers, on macOS 13+ with Apple Silicon, in your real repositories. The longer versions are below.
What is Motriz?
Motriz is a product-driven AI workspace with one persistent AI co-founder. Start from an idea or a product question, or continue from a repository — Motriz helps you understand what you have, find the next move, and turn it into reviewable software in your real Git repository, with everything you learn recorded as evidence along the product journey. After launch, the journey follows activation, retention, and repeatability through the signals you record or connect. You talk to one AI co-founder; specialists do the legwork behind the scenes.
What does the free account include?
One product journey and your First Decision: managed research that turns one product question into cited findings, counter-evidence, explicit assumptions, one next test, and a clear Build, Reshape, Test, Pause, or Stop call — with no model to configure and no card. The account includes 50 credits per month for managed work, runs one managed job at a time, and keeps managed research artifacts for 30 days. The full coding workspace and BYOK are included, with no Motriz markup.
How much does Motriz cost?
A free account includes 50 credits each month for managed AI work, with no card required. Managed work is metered: the allowance resets monthly, unused credits do not roll over, and Motriz does not sell top-ups or charge overages. If the month's allowance runs out, your workspace, local work, and the providers you connect yourself (BYOK) remain available. Pro costs $25 per month or $250 per year and includes 300 credits each month. Pro starts with a 7-day free trial.
What do I need to run Motriz?
A Mac with Apple Silicon running macOS 13 (Ventura) or newer. Builds are signed and notarized, and the app updates itself in-app. Windows and Linux are on the roadmap but not available yet.
Which AI models and coding agents does Motriz use?
Every provider is optional: Claude Code (via your existing subscription login),
Codex (via your existing codex login), ChatGPT (sign in
with your browser), plus API access to Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Grok, Ollama Cloud, OpenRouter,
Hugging Face, and Cerebras. Run them individually or in flows like Plan → Execute → Review, where one
agent plans, another implements, and a third reviews in a loop until approved.
Do I need an API key?
Not necessarily. Claude Code and Codex run through the CLI logins you already have, and ChatGPT signs in through your browser — no API key for any of those. The direct API providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Grok, Ollama Cloud, OpenRouter, Hugging Face, and Cerebras) each take an API key or access token. You configure only the providers you want to use.
Is my data private? Does Motriz phone home?
Motriz uses an account and hosted services for identity, entitlements, managed AI, and cloud capabilities. Signing in does not upload your local journeys, repositories, Build state, provider credentials, or BYOK configuration. Those stay in the local app database; provider credentials are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. A cloud capability receives only the scoped data needed when you explicitly use it. The app also sends anonymous, aggregate-only product counters.
What questions does the journey ask?
The questions a founder has to answer sooner or later: What are we really betting on? · What must be true? · What did the market do? · What is the next best bet? · Is real pull forming? Milestones sit under each — from the starting point and the product thesis, through test design and market response, to the build checkpoint, launch, retention, and repeatability. Each one is explained here.
What happens at the build checkpoint?
At the build checkpoint, your co-founder prepares a scorecard — the evidence for, the evidence against, and the open risks — and recommends one of five recorded decisions: Continue, Proceed to build, Strengthen the evidence, Reshape, or Stop on evidence. The recommendation is grounded in the recorded evidence, but you make the call — and every verdict is stored with its reasoning, including when you overrule the recommendation.
What lands in my repository after the handoff?
A build pack committed under docs/venture/, sized to the build type you chose. An MVP slice
travels with learning-plan.md, mvp-scope.md, prd.md, and
ux-flow.md; prototypes and technical spikes carry lighter packs. Every handoff includes
evidence-pack.md — digests of the interviews, experiments, and checkpoint verdicts; raw
documents never enter the repo. The handoff seeds the first tasks, queued riskiest-first. Nothing runs
until you press Run.
Which repositories does Motriz work with?
Motriz discovers Git repositories on your machine or works against any folder path you give it. At the build handoff you can create a new repository, pick an existing tracked repo, or keep the current one on a later round. You can also run a product with no repository at all and connect code later. GitHub integration covers PR status, checks, reviews, and merges.
Is it safe to point Motriz at my repository?
Motriz is a personal power tool by design: its agents and models can read, write, and execute inside the repository you select, without per-command permission prompts. Role instructions can narrow intended behavior, but they are not a security boundary. Parallel tasks can run in isolated Git worktrees, and real branches, tests, diffs, and pull requests keep changes reviewable — but you should only point Motriz at repositories and connected workspaces you are comfortable letting an agent modify.
Is Motriz available in Portuguese?
The motriz.ai website is available in English and Brazilian Portuguese. The app itself is English-first today: the interface and the documents it generates (PRD, memos, verdicts) are written in English. You can chat with the co-founder in Portuguese and it will follow the conversation, but the artifacts it produces come out in English. Full Portuguese support in the app is coming soon.
